My Experiments with Sushi

Picture 002 I love sea food. So, I am unable dismiss sushi as raw fish! But my first two attempts at eating sushi ended up as damp squibs. On both occasions, I started with a lot of gusto despite the warnings to take it slow and easy. My enthusiasm died after a couple of bites into the food. Then I quit.

I tried sushi for the first time in 1999. After a gap of three years, I tried it again in 2002. When I shared this experience with good friends who are also sushi lovers, they urged me to try it again with the right mix of wasabi and sauce. But I could never gather courage to do so. It is not the raw fish but the possibly unfinished plate of food that bothered me.

A newfound friend in Paris took me to a sushi restaurant last week. This time, my friend explained all the “how-to”s of eating sushi. After dipping into the sauce with wasabi, sushi turned out to be a pleasure ride. Moreover, a whole new world opened in front of me; a world of Japanese restaurants. I do not have to restrict myself to Hibachi.

  1. Good to know you have overcome you fear of Sushi.I suppose everything has a technique which has to be followed while eating. I am always amazed at people who eat Dosa with fork and spoon: one must really dig in with the fingers to enjoy it.

  2. Hey may be I should give it a try too. I had my first and last taste of Sushi while I was stuck in Frankfurt Airport in '07. The raw 10g of Salmon left a 'last'ing impression.

I'll take your advice and will try it with wasabi. :) And thanks. You never know how much a blogpost may turn useful to you Nona, like this has been to me.

I'll let you know how things went for me.. :-)

  4. @Harish - :) You should.

@Rama - Thanks. But technique of eating dosa with fork? :)

@ScorpioGenius - For trying it out, go for smaller portions of sushi. The dish shown in the pic had other properly fried items too. That was my backup plan and I didn't go for jumbo sushi dish. :) Also, add Wasabi to sauce. Start with a small quantity as Wasabi is pungent. Dip the sushi in the sauce and soak it before eating it. Enjoy the ride and let me know. :)

@JoshiMukard - I am not sure about the sushi places in Bangalore. Try http://bangalore.burrp.com/

  5. I tried last year once, and it didnt go down my throat...All the thoughts of eating a fish which might have been caught many days ago, with all that bacteria and atleast some amount of rotten meat ( however fresh they claim)...And few days back i reveived an email forward which shows a Sushi eater infected with some worn in his brain....and all this has created a psycho-phobia inside me......nice to know you enjoyed it.

  8. @ZB - I get your point. It is always best to check these kind of news at www.snopes.com. I did and found a picture. Totally yucky picture there! But sushi did not cause it.

@Aparna - I also think it is an acquired taste if you not Japanese. :) It took 3 attempts to acquire it!

@Vineet - Thanks for dropping by! I agree with your comments

  9. The only form of seafood that I liked in my meat-eating days was fried fish and crab curry. Even if I were to go back to meat eating, I doubt I would have sushi. But it does sound fashionable to like sushi, just like caviar is an acquired taste ( never could understand why it was such a delicacy - except for the high price with which it came)

  10. @Radha - The quality process might be the reason. The fish has to be good and fresh.. Right?

  11. You know three years back I gave up non-veg. No regrets about that, except that I never got to taste sushi!
