Switching jobs...

I have been involved in Information Technology for the past 16 years. In fact, I started in this field and faithfully remained attached to it. I do not know what it takes to change the line of work. So anyone who knows and does this automatically climbs up the charts in my viewpoint. According to me, it takes a lot of courage to do it.

The bigger question is why do people leave everything they know and pursue an entirely different line of work. My friend in Bengaluru always talks about opening a restaurant. If any other person had told me this, my answer will be a smirk. Having tasted the results of his cooking experiments from college days, I believe he is on the right track. He has the right skills and also the interest. He should just do it.

Today I listened to an interesting story regarding switching jobs. I met a property dealer who was in entire another field of work previously. So what made her change jobs? She was looking for an apartment in Paris for a long time before finding a suitable one. Once she zeroed in the apartment, she missed the thrill in hunting for apartments like  locating a property, checking it out etc. So she decided to become a property dealer!

In order to avoid becoming boring I avoid being bored. Changing jobs, changing countries, all adds to my interesting life!

    1. That is clear. I understand.

I should also have asked "how" people do it. Like I said, it needs a lot of courage to take the decision when you consider all the uncertainties. Where do people find it? Being bored is a good enough motivator to drive people?

  2. I think you've found the answer to why people switch jobs.
I have been in the I.T industry too. didn't feel my heart there, switched to instrumentation, after all , that was my major, still not happy.
switched to media. loved it. and will love it forever.
the creativity, the spontaneity, the colors, that's what I am about.
You don't understand cuz, obviously, you're in love with what you do.
and that's a blessing. you never had to switch to find happiness! :)

  3. Well, Nona, I am a qualified Geologist by education and training. Yet, I had to give up my dreams of pursuing it as a profession as there were no jobs when I completed my post-graduation (the field is better today). I got a break in the publishing world, purely by chance and today I am an editor and a teacher by profession and it works. About 2 years back, I discovered the joys and pains of writing and am not averse to considering it as a job option in the future. I have enjoyed being a Geologist, I enjoy being an editor and a teacher (on most days), and I think I could enjoy being a writer full time, though the uncertainty part has to be tackled.

I think ultimately it is about enjoying what you do and what gives you pleasure. For me, it is also what gives me a creative high ! And yes, where I can support myself.

    1. Glad you liked it. I think most of wonder about what happens next. Either we are too happy or too scared to make a change.

  6. If you enjoy your work, stick to it. It is when you find it dull and boring or find something else that excites you and that could bring a new meaning in your life, then it is time to change.

  7. Certainly it does take a lot of courage to follow your heart... But, doing the stuff you do and doing it with utmost passion is also a path to success... reminds me a quote from Mohammed Ali - "If I's been a garbage collector, I'd make sure I'd be the greatest garbage collector of the world" :)
