Books: Hit Refresh

Hit Refresh. A common advise after a change is rolled out. It magically makes things work by reloading, often the webpage. So it makes a catchy title. It is also an apt one because Satya Nadella is addressing the changes in Microsoft after he has taken over. Like every company in the technology space, Microsoft is adapting and evolving. This book informs the initiatives in the organization and the journey so far.

Satya emphasizes on two points which incidentally are becoming popular in building organizational culture. These two points are empathy and growth mindset. The ability to understand and share the feelings of another is defined as empathy. When you possess this characteristic, it is easier to co-exist with others. When put in the context of a large organization like Microsoft, it enables them to build better product by understanding the changes they are making for their userbase.

Carol Dweck has popularised mindsets, namely growth and fixed. Many authors and researchers in behavioral economics and related field have picked it and expanded on the theme. Satya brings up the growth mindset and relates it to the passion for learning. Without a hunger for learning new things, one cannot adapt to the changing world. Without learning, we remain unevolved. So it is imperative to nurture people into developing a growth mindset.

Hit Refresh is not a biography. Satya dedicates three chapters to show us a glimpse of his humble beginnings. But it is more for showing the reader of his constitution. Satya demonstrates his leadership qualities by communicating to the world his vision, what steps he has done to implement the vision, and the current progress made. It takes courage to write about the vision even when the jury is still out. The book is an interesting read.
