Movie Review: Justice League

Even though we were bombarded with Justice League trailers for what seems to be an eternity, there is no excitement mainly because of the disaster that was Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. Even the success of Wonder Woman is not enough to pique my interest. DC characters have been darker than it's counterparts from Marvel. But the characters are not attractive as the ones written in the Nolan trilogy. One of the main difference between Nolan's treatment and the subsequent films was the absence of humor. On the other hand, Marvel has an abundance of gaiety and camaraderie. Justice League has humor, and hence it is more tolerable than the previous installments. It still fails to impress.

The film treads a dangerous path. As this movie is the first in the series, it has to show the origin of members and also the formation of the team. Both of the subjects have been done to death in the past. Luckily for us, the film does not waste time on the origin and goes quickly for the formation. The reason for the formation of Justice League is the quest for three Mother Boxes by Steppenwolf(an unrecognizable Ciaran Hinds using motion capture). Batman/Bruce Wayne(Ben Affleck) is worried and enlists Wonder Woman(Gal Gadot). This task is easy as they are already acquaintance. The induction of Flash/Barry Allen(Ezra Miller) is also easy as he is desperately seeking friends. It is more challenging to get Arthur Curry/Aquaman(Jason Momoa) and Victor Stone/Cyborg(Ray Fisher) to sign on the dotted lines. Batman is guilt-ridden for causing the death of Superman(Henry Cavill) and tries to revive him. While Superman lies six feet below ground, the women in his life, his mother Martha Kent(Diane Lane) and his girlfriend Lois Lane(Amy Adams) are bonding.

As you can see, there are a lot of things happening. It is easy to disengage and look towards the exit or the wristwatch. The saving grace of the movie is Flash. Ezra Miller makes us smile and laughs with his goofy dialogues. The technique used to demonstrate Flash's speed is pleasing. All the objects in the frame move very slowly while Flash moves faster than them but slightly slower than the normal movement. But when you compare this action to what Quicksilver does in X-men movies, the scenes fall short. There are several potshots at Batman which is in fact funny. Henry Cavill did not feature in the commercials. So when he appeared in the movie, I thought he was created using CGI because of scheduling conflicts. There was something unnatural about his face. I found out later that Henry Cavill had a mustache which was removed digitally.

Zack Snyder uses his trademark dark tones in this movie. I was disappointed with his Sucker Punch. Man of Steel was better because it explores Superman's struggles to conform and his love for his foster parents despite the confusing actions. This movie is much better than his earlier movie Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. The improvement is not enough. I advise to sit this one out. You are not missing anything but I do feel sorry for the lead actors. They are all capable. But there are in the wrong franchise!
