Movie Review: Aadhi

Jithu Joseph seems to be an odd choice for directing the launch movie for Pranav Mohanlal. Jithu's scripts demand seasoned actors. Besides, Jithu's forte is thrillers. So why would he be associated with a newcomer and a movie featuring action sequences based on Parkour? On the other hand, this choice also raises the curiosity factor for a reason. Pranav has assisted Jithu in the past. So Jithu should know Pranav's strength better. Probably, Pranav is no ordinary newcomer.

Pranav is Aadhi, an aspiring musician who is also an expert in Parkour. He has supportive parents in Siddique and Lena. To pursue a career in music, he ends up in an elite club in Bengaluru. After performing in the club, his life changes. It is not his career that takes off. Instead, he crosses paths with a powerful wheeler-dealer. Soon, he is on the run where his skills in Parkour comes in handy.

Like every Malayali, I am excited about Pranav's launch. And I was rooting for him with the first song that accompanied the title cards. Even if you remove the shadow of the complete actor from our lenses, Pranav still needs to improve his emoting skills. But then it is his first movie. None of the predecessors (read it as star sons) had impressed us in their first movie. They all created a space for themselves gradually with each new successive movie.

There are a few things to be noted about Pranav. There is no hint of the famous "slant." Instead, he has a gait of his own, that of an athlete. You will not see the mannerisms of his father in him onscreen which is commendable considerable everyone tries to imitate the complete actor at some level. Pranav excels in action scenes. I felt Jithu has not done an excellent job of showcasing those action scenes thrillingly.

Jithu has ensured there is ample support for Pranav in the form of younger actors. The veterans are restricted to Siddique, Lena, Meghanathan and Jagapathi Babu. The supporting actors that stay with us are Anusree and the Premam trio comprising of Siju Wilson, Sharaf U Dheen, and Krishna Sankar. Anusree is a riot. Siju Wilson tries a negative character which turned out to be too subdued for his talents. It is a slight disappointment as Siju is the one who can easily be in the same space as Siddique who can do all kinds of roles. Krishna Sankar is a natural who can say a predictable line and still make us laugh. Saraf U Dheen uses his accent to invoke laughter. So the jury is still out on him.

The action scenes are excellent. The emotional tug is too pronounced at places which lags the movie. But it is still okay for a watch.
